Process The St. Francis School District has a number of facility needs that must be addressed promptly. To prioritize these needs, the board has undertaken a process that involved the participation of the community. The process began late last year with a community-wide survey. The survey asked community members about what they thought was important in terms of the school district. After the survey report was presented to the board, the board solicited the assistance of community members as part of a facilities study committee. This committee, whose members represent a cross section of the St. Francis community, presented the board with a prioritized list of facility items they believe the board should address. Members of the committee presented their prioritized list at a regularly scheduled board meeting in July. In September, the board used the results of the community survey and the prioritized list from the community facilities study committee to create a series of solutions to meet the district's most urgent facility needs. After considering the options, the board worked to find a lower cost alternative that addressed the most basic needs of the district. The $14.9 million dollar option being forwarded by the board to voters addresses the most urgent and basic needs including those that were of particular importance to community members as indicated in the community survey and what was found to be the most important by the facility studies committee. If you have questions about the referendum, please contact a school board member or Superintendent Carol Topinka.
